Metal accumulation in benthic macroinvertebrates following wildfire in Californian Cascade and Sierra Nevada mountains

My research is focused on the accumulation of metals released from wildfires by benthic macroinvertebrates (BMIs) and the trophic implications of this bioaccumulation. I will utilize benthic macroinvertebrate samples from years before and after the 2021 Dixie Fire to investigate how fires can influence stream biota. I am primarily interested in the persistence and biomagnification of metals in BMI tissue and potential trophic interactions, specifically between primary consumer and predator BMI groups. Additional research goals are to assess the recovery of streams from wildfire by using physical and chemical habitat measurements and how these can relate to BMI community composition.
